DC (battery) Power

The history of battery powered stairlifts

Acorn Stairlifts pioneered DC technology in the stairlift industry. This method was chosen by Acorn due to the inherent advantages of safety, smooth power delivery and the ability to operate normally during a mains power failure outage.

All Acorn Stairlifts, including our straight stairlift and curved stairlifts, use DC battery powered technology which means that they are power efficient and you'll still be able to use your stairlift even in a power cut!

There are many advantages of having a DC powered stairlift and they include:

  • No messy trailing electrical cables that could cause you to trip and fall over

  • In a power cut your stairlift keeps on working for up to 20 journeys with battery power

  • The stairlift is power efficient, only charging when needed and not constantly using power.

Acorn Stairlifts represents a major step forward in comfort, reliability and safe ride quality. Acorn’s engineering excellence ensures the Acorn Stairlift Power Supply provides a smooth and ultra-quiet near silent 'Soft start / soft stop' operation, this means that there is no jolting or lurching as your stair lift starts or finishes its journey.

Acorn Stairlifts Battery Powered Power Supply

The Acorn Stairlift is battery powered, allowing additional 'peace of mind' in the event of a power outage cut. Acorn Stairlifts are charged from the domestic mains supply with a transformer and the lift is safely powered by direct current (DC) supplied by sealed rechargeable maintenance-free batteries.

These batteries are automatically recharged every time the stair lift is parked on the charge points at the top and bottom of the rail. The charging points are connected to the mains electricity supply through a transformer plugged into a normal home electrical outlet. This adds to the feeling of safety and stability.

Using this method of power for your stair lift has many advantages. If there is ever a power failure in your home your stair lift continues to function, so you will never get stranded. There is no mains voltage power on the stair lift. DC battery power gives an extremely smooth and near silent operation. As the power supply is onboard the stair lift itself there is no troublesome trailing cable as you get with AC powered lifts.

The stair lift may still be used when the batteries are still being charged. A continually charged battery system ensures your star lift will always work, even in the event of a mains power failure. Acorn Stairlifts innovative technology and engineering ensures a quick, simple installation and service with no mess or disruption.

DC Direct Current Battery Power

The 21st Century DC Battery Powered Stairlift

Today, in the 21st century, the direct current (DC) storage battery is a dominant  factor,  which is now used extensively in a host of personal, residential and commercial applications such as the modern DC battery power, battery powered stairlift, cell phone, iPod, computer and tablet, smoke detector, electric razor, power drill, mp3 player, thermostat, laptop or smartphone. These products plug in to an AC outlet, and yet its technology relies mainly on direct current (DC) battery power.

Direct current (DC) is the unidirectional flow of electric charge produced by sources such as batteries or solar cells while Alternating Current (AC) is the form in which electric power is delivered to businesses and residences.

Thomas Edison, world’s greatest inventor, was entirely self-taught. Everything he knew about science he had learned from books and by tinkering with chemicals and telegraph equipment. Edison engages in a "war of the currents" with George Westinghouse as he challenges the safety of the new alternating-current (AC) electric systems with evidence conducted at his laboratory.
In 1909 Edison markets his direct current (DC) alkaline storage battery, which is now used extensively in a host of personal, residential and commercial applications.
