Travel speed for domestic straight rail stairlift carriages can vary between 14 feet per minute to 30 feet per minute.

Programming Travel Speed for a Curved Rail Carriage

An Auto Speed Feature and a Self Leveling Transport System Feature can adjust the Travel Speed and Chair Leveling for domestic curved rail stairlift carriages.

A Programmable Curved Rail Carriage's Speed Travel can be programmed for the rail (or to the rail) by a manufacturer which includes these Auto Speed and Self Leveling Features with their product.

The stairlift can travel at different speeds. The speed of a curved rail stairlift carriage may vary on the journey; if the controls cause them to slow down on inclines, curves, and bends and at the end of the stairs journey.

A Programmable Curved Rail Carriage can use an encoding device to create a map of the rail's path and the program charts and defines the travel speed and leveling of the carriage at different points on the rail. The stairlift carriage is programmed from the beginning of its journey at the bottom of the staircase to the end of its journey at the top of the staircase.

A slower speed must be used on the small radius turns or internal bends or curves on the staircase. This is for the passenger’s comfort, as the journey around these curves and bends, at a high speed can give the impression as though the user is being pushed forward and out of the chair seat. A slower speed on curves also ensures that the carriage does not cause excessive wear on the rail rack.

A slower speed must be used at either end of the stairlift travel to ensure that the stairlift comes to a comfortable, safe and gentle stop.
